Seventy-three interviews with Maine residents who tell personal stories, narratives, and anecdotes about their experiences during the Great Ice Storm of January 1998. Interviews were collected from volunteers at the 1998 Maine Festival and Common Ground Fair.

MF102 Miramichi Folksong Festival Collection

This collection includes a series of interviews relating to the Miramichi Folksong Festival and recordings of various years of the festival. The Miramichi Folksong Festival takes place annually in Newcastle, New Brunswick. It was founded by Louise Manny in 1958 as a means of showcasing and preserving the traditional songs and ballads of New Brunswick, especially those found in the Miramichi River region. Twenty-five photographs and one picture postcard relating to the University of Maine. Photos capture events held during Maine Day, May 1948; Winter Carnival; and other campus activities. Included in the collection are several aerial views of the campus, circa 1940s. All photos are subsumed in Accession NA 2143. Donated by Edward O. Schriver, February 1990. Schriver received his Ph.D. from the University of Maine in 1967 and subsequently taught in the Department of History for 26 years. No restrictions.

MF104 Whitewater Raft Guides Project / Ian Cameron Collection

This collection consists of a series of interviews with whitewater rafting guides conducted by Ian H. Cameron in 1986 as part of an independent study class at the University of Maine. Cameron interviewed four whitewater rafting guides on the West Branch of the Penobscot river and some of the experiences they had.

MF105 Margaret Martin / Liveaboard Sailors Interviews

This collection consists of nine interviews with people who live aboard sailboats, mostly along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida, although one interview was done in Maine. The live-aboard sailors discuss their life histories; experiences on the sea; design and maintenance of their vessels; recipes; sea lore; and sea stories (yarns).

MF109 Folk Traditions Festival Collection

The event was sponsored by the Maine Folklife Center, the first annual Folk Traditions Festival was held November 6-7, 1998 at the University of Maine in Orono. The festival featured musicians and dancers from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Some examples of the music performed were Cape Breton fiddle music and song selections in English and Gaelic are played with talking interspersed throughout.
