Abstract
More and more, American consumers are becoming aware of the effects of their consumption habits on the world around them. In an attempt to bring about a more sustainable future, more and more consumers are reassessing the companies they buy from to see whether their values align with that future. Fortunately, relevant information is often out there online regarding the environmental, social, and governance practices of any given company. Unfortunately, this data is often hard to find, even harder to interpret, and surrounded by “greenwashing”: misleading marketing tactics which conceal a company’s true practices. Most people simply don’t have time to do the research on their own. GreenDex is a new software platform that solves this problem. GreenDex collects, interprets, and presents sustainability data for a wide range of companies. It offers at-a-glance grades for each company based on their data, so that users can easily evaluate and compare companies. This way, anyone considering buying from a certain company may simply open the GreenDex app, search for that company, and then see its sustainability grade. In doing so, GreenDex aims to provide a reputational incentive for companies to do better by their stakeholders beyond just profit.
