Abstract/ Summary

This article explores the relationship between silviculture and carbon storage in Maine's forests. Trees remove atmospheric carbon dioxide via photosynthesis and store it in their biomass, most of which is about 50% carbon. Leaf area index (LAI) is a key indicator of a stand's growth potential and carbon uptake. LAI and carbon sequestration in unmanaged white pine stands of different ages are illustrated and contrasted with managed pine stands. An example of Maine’s pine resource illustrates how landscape-scale carbon storage could be expanded greatly while also nearly tripling the annual pine harvest.
