Abstract/ Summary
This article describes essential techniques for monitoring tree and stand growth in forests. Periodic remeasurement of diameter at breast height (dbh) with a diameter tape requires permanently marking trees with a specially designed tree bark scribe at 4.5 feet. To assess stand conditions, forest sampling using fixed-area plots or variable-radius point sampling is required. Remeasuring trees on permanent plots allows for the analysis of forest dynamics, such as accretion, ingrowth, and mortality, and provides valuable insights into the effects of silvicultural treatments and overall forest health not obtainable with temporary-plot inventories. Trees can be uniquely identified using numbered aluminum tags attached with short rust-proof staples into the bark only (not wood).
