Description
Color photograph of a tall, polished metal column topped with a complex kinetic sculpture of gears, arcs, and chimes in front of a low school building. The photograph shows “Daedalus,” a kinetic sculpture by Roger L. Majorowicz, 1988, installed at Marshwood Junior High School in South Berwick, Maine, rising from a square cast concrete base set in a small landscaped bed. A smooth, reflective stainless steel cylinder forms the tall vertical support, catching the warm light. Atop this column sits an intricate wind-turned abstraction made of painted stainless steel, cast iron, steel, and bronze, including several curved arms that loop outward, a ring of toothed gears, a pointed blade-like element, and three vertical metal wind chimes that hang near the center. The moving components are arranged within and around a large circular frame, creating a layered composition that suggests both mechanical motion and a stylized figure reaching upward into the blue sky. The flat facade and windows of the school provide a simple backdrop. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16873-p16875, p17064-p17076)(NA4800.)
