Description
Black and white photograph of the sculpture "Lifeforce" depicting three leaping dolphins. This photograph displays a side view of three dolphins sculpted from black granite, rising vertically as part of the work by American sculptor Cabot Lyford. The work was commissioned in 1979, installed in 1983, and relocated to the Portland Regency Hotel courtyard in 1987. The granite used was quarried from Deer Isle, Maine. In the background, street lamps, parked cars, a brick wall, trees, and a multi-story building are visible, giving context to the public setting of the sculpture. 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
