Description
Color photograph of three seal sculptures resting on large granite boulders in a grassy school yard. The photograph shows “New Horizons,” a sculptural installation by Cabot Lyford, 1991, at the Vivian E. Hussey Primary School in Berwick, Maine, consisting of three smooth seals carved from Canadian black granite arranged within a grid of nine rounded granite boulders. Two adult seals occupy the central rocks, one lying along the stone with its head raised and flippers extended, while the other curls more tightly. A smaller baby seal reclines against its mother’s side, its body pressed along hers to emphasize their connection. The boulders are spaced in three rows of three, partially embedded in the dry grass to suggest a natural rocky outcrop, and additional rocks and patches of ground are visible around the grouping, indicating the work’s outdoor setting on the school grounds. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17060-p17063)(NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
