Description
Color photograph of a tall polished metal cylinder supporting a cluster of slender rods and hanging bells in front of a brick school building under a clear blue sky. The photograph shows “Macwahoc,” a sculpture by Roger L. Majorowicz, 1990, installed on a square cast concrete base near the entrance of Cascade Brook Elementary School, Farmington, Maine. The Abenaki word, Macwahoc is translated as bog or wet ground in English. A smooth, reflective stainless steel cylinder rises from the base, and from its top emerge several angled silicon bronze rods that splay outward like branches or reeds, each supporting one of five cast bronze wind bells with small stainless steel wind catchers attached. The bells hang at different heights around the central cluster, designed to chime as the wind moves through them. The bright metal surfaces catch the sunlight and stand out against the red brick walls, while leafless trees and patches of snow on the ground hint at a cold season. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
