Description
Black and white photograph of a tall metal sculpture consisting of a globe balanced above a polished cylinder on a concrete base, set near a roadside with leafless trees in the background. The photograph shows “River World,” a sculpture by Roger L. Majorowicz, 1992, at Laura E. Richards Elementary School in Gardiner, Maine, standing on a square concrete base surrounded by a ring of emerging flowers in a grassy strip between the street and sidewalk. A smooth stainless steel cylinder rises vertically from the base, its reflective surface catching light and subtly mirroring the surroundings. At the top of the column, several stacked circular elements support a large polished globe whose surface is decorated with swirling patterns, suggesting continents and water currents. A long, angled, telescoping rod extends upward from the globe, emphasizing vertical movement. In the background, bare trees, parked vehicles, and modest buildings line the street, providing a small-town context that contrasts with the sculpture’s global theme. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16873-p16875, p17064-p17076)(NA4800.)

Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
