Description
Color photograph of the silhouetted top of an abstract metal weather vane sculpture set against a cloudy sky. The photograph focuses on the upper section of “Whitefield Heritage,” a kinetic weather vane sculpture by Roger L. Majorowicz, 1988, at Whitefield Elementary School in North Whitefield, Maine, showing only the portion that turns in the wind. The dark forms are made from cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and bronze. They are mounted on a narrow vertical support that rises from the bottom edge of the frame and branch outward into a complex arrangement of slender rods, curved arms, and circular shapes. A long, pointed blade projects horizontally to the left, while a large disc with a round opening, several arcing elements, and a small cluster of vertical cylinders (wind chimes) near the center suggest futuristic instruments or machinery as they balance around the axis. The silhouette of the sculpture contrasts sharply with the bright, partly cloudy sky behind it. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16873-p16875, p17064-p17076)(NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
