Description
Black and white photograph of two tall, abstract textile-covered concrete sculptures standing on a grassy area with trees and a parked vehicle in the background on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. "Architectural Fabric Formwork for Reinforced Concrete Structures," Spring 1991, is a project conducted by Mark West's Advanced Architectural Design class. The sculpture on the left is a thick, upright column with two pairs of evenly spaced circular protrusions on its front and back, placed at lower and middle sections of the shaft. The piece is topped by a cluster of larger, bulbous, overlapping forms that wrap around the top of the column. The sculpture on the right is a slender column that narrows and appears to subtly twist toward the top; its surface shows a vertical line of small, pucker-like dimples or seams running down the front and a wider, slightly bulging section just above the midpoint. Near the ground, this right-hand sculpture transitions into a series of stacked, rounded and ribbed forms that resemble rings or cushions around the base, creating a textured pedestal that meets the grass. 1994. Abbe Levin, photographer. (See p17157-p17160)(NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
