Description
Black and white photograph of two abstract textile-covered concrete column sculptures standing on a patch of grass next to a parking lot with a pickup truck and low building on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. "Architectural Fabric Formwork for Reinforced Concrete Structures," Spring 1991, is a project conducted by Mark West's Advanced Architectural Design class. The sculpture on the left consists of a tall, smooth cylindrical column rising from a large, rounded base that resembles an inflated cushion resting on the ground; the base is topped by a ring of three horizontally stacked, pillow-like forms that encircle the lower part of the shaft, which then continues upward as a plain, even cylinder with only faint seams or surface variations. The sculpture on the right is a tall, slender column whose shaft is wrapped by a continuous, thick, rope-like concrete form that spirals around it from near the ground almost to the top, creating alternating bulging and recessed sections. The spiral elements appear as rounded lobes that press outward, while the underlying column remains relatively straight, ending in a short, smooth cylindrical cap at the top. 1994. Abbe Levin, photographer. (See p17157-p17160)(NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
