Description
Black and white photograph of three vertical textile-covered concrete sculptures set outdoors on a lawn bordered by tall evergreen trees on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. "Architectural Fabric Formwork for Reinforced Concrete Structures," Spring 1991, is a project conducted by Mark West's Advanced Architectural Design class. The sculptures resemble elongated columns, each displaying a distinct surface texture and shape. The left sculpture is the simplest, tapering slightly upward from a wider rounded base to a smooth shaft, then swelling into a bulbous midsection that suggests two rounded forms before narrowing again toward a flat, slightly flared top. The middle sculpture is divided into three stacked segments. The lowest portion has a shallow, vertical groove and a gentle outward curve, while the upper portion narrows, then swells before narrowing again into a cone-like top. The right sculpture is the most intricately detailed, beginning with a broad rounded base, then rising into a long, narrow shaft covered with dense, ringlike horizontal ridges that give it a ribbed appearance, and finishing with a smoother, slightly tapered section supporting a short, flared top. The sculptures stand close together in a loose row, emphasizing their varied profiles and textures while forming a single unified grouping in the open landscape. 1994. Abbe Levin, photographer. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
