Description

Black and white photograph of three abstract concrete sculptures standing together on a grassy area near a road and trees on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. "Architectural Fabric Formwork for Reinforced Concrete Structures," Spring 1991, is a project conducted by Mark West's Advanced Architectural Design class. One short and two tall, vertical concrete sculptures are arranged in a loose cluster on a patch of grass with leafless and evergreen trees, a building, parked cars, and a roadway visible in the background. The sculpture on the left is the shortest and has a rounded, almost egg-shaped main body that tapers slightly toward the ground, topped with a smooth, irregularly shaped cap that looks like a folded or draped form. The central sculpture is the tallest and consists of a long, narrow column that is wider at the top, with a slightly flared, squared-off upper edge; its surface shows a central vertical band of repeated, shallow, rounded lacing or ribbing from top to bottom, suggesting a seam-like texture. The sculpture on the right is another tall column with its shaft divided into several stacked sections: a low, plain lower segment; a middle band composed of dense, irregular, knobby protrusions resembling clustered knots or stones; and an upper section of three rounded, drum-like forms stacked directly under a smooth, tulip-shaped top with gently curved sides and a flat upper edge. All three sculptures are comprised of textile-covered concrete and have softly rounded edges. They are spaced so that the viewer can see clear gaps of grass and background between them, emphasizing their individual forms as well as their relationship as a grouped installation. 1994. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
