Description
Black and white photograph of a stone camel sculpture resting on a rectangular base in a wooded outdoor setting at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The photograph shows a side view of a carved stone camel with two humps and a stylized body, positioned on a low pedestal near the trunk of a tall tree, with bare trees and leaf-covered ground in the background. The camel has a raised head with an open mouth, evenly folded legs tucked beneath its body, and simplified carved details on the mane and legs that recall traditional Chinese stone guardian animals. The untitled sculpture by an unidentified Chinese sculptor, is one of a pair acquired in 1931 in Peking, now Beijing, by Professor Marshall P. Cram of the Department of Chemistry at Bowdoin College. The exact origin and date of the work is unknown. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
