Description
Color photograph of a seated stone figure, possibly the Japanese figure Daikoku, holding a mallet and sack while resting on a rectangular pedestal in a sunlit outdoor setting. The photograph centers on a carved figure with a rounded face and hood-like headdress, seated upright atop a plain rectangular base. The figure’s proper right arm bends upward so that the hand grips a rounded mallet held near the shoulder, while the proper left hand holds a sack draped over the proper left shoulder. The torso is broad and simply modeled, and the figure sits on two stacked, drum-like forms carved with horizontal bands and circular medallions, suggesting bales or cushions. Subtle lines mark the eyes, nose, and smiling mouth, giving the figure a calm, content expression despite the weathered stone surface. The pedestal stands on patchy grass and soil, and the background shows a bright lawn framed by dark trees and shrubs, indicating an outdoor installation at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The artist and the work’s precise place of origin and date are unidentified. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
