Description
Color photograph of a seated stone figure on a rectangular concrete pedestal surrounded by dense foliage and fallen flower petals. The figure, possibly the Japanese figure Ebisu, wears a rounded headdress that tapers slightly at the top and has large rounded shapes at the earlobes that resemble heavy earrings. The figure’s proper left leg is crossed in front while the proper right leg is bent, and the proper right hand is clenched into a fist resting near the knee. Under its proper left arm, the figure holds a fish, whose head and body are visible against the side of the torso. The face is broad, with deeply carved eyes, arched brows, and a wide, closed-mouth smile that creates pronounced cheek lines. The stone surface appears rough and weathered, and scattered petals lie on the ground around the base, indicating an outdoor setting at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The artist and the work’s precise place of origin and date are unidentified. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
