Description
Black and white photograph of a carved stone guardian lion statue perched on a square pedestal against a background of leafy trees and shrubs. The photograph presents a close view of a guardian lion sculpture seated upright on a small square platform at the top of a tall stone post, with the lion facing slightly to the left and its mouth open in a firm expression. The lion’s body is compact and muscular, with straight front legs, rounded paws, and a broad chest marked by shallow carved bands that suggest a collar or harness. Its head is large in proportion to the body, with a short snout, defined brows, and a mane made of rounded, conical curls that continue down the back of its neck. The platform beneath the lion is decorated with raised triangular motifs along the edges, and the smooth sides of the post extend down out of the frame. Soft-focus leaves and tree trunks fill the background, indicating that the sculpture stands in a planted area at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. One of two guardian lion figures by unidentified Asian sculptors, the work’s precise place of origin and date are unidentified. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
