Description
Color photograph of a carved stone lantern standing on a patch of grass in a wooded area on the Bowdoin College campus. The photograph shows a tall stone structure, possibly a Japanese lantern known as a tōrō or ishidōrō, rising from an octagonal base that sits directly on the ground. Above the base, a rounded, lotus-like platform supports a cylindrical post, which is banded near the middle. The multi-sided housing contains a recessed, window-like opening on the front face. This chamber is topped by a broad, curved roof whose corners sweep gently upward, and the lantern is crowned by a rounded, multi-tiered finial resembling gourd shapes. The stone surface is pale gray and appears weathered, with subtle variations in texture and color. Surrounding the lantern are tall tree trunks, scattered low shrubs, and dappled sunlight filtering through the foliage, indicating an outdoor setting on the grounds of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. One of three carved stone lanterns on the campus, the artist and the work’s precise place of origin and date are unidentified. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
