Description

Color photograph of a carved stone lantern standing in an open, grassy area near trees and a wooden fence outside Pine Grove Cemetery. The photograph shows a tall stone structure, possibly a Japanese lantern known as a tōrō or ishidōrō, rising from a square base set on the ground. The base supports a rounded, lotus-like platform from which a cylindrical post extends upward, banded near the middle. Above the post, a housing contains a small window-like opening on the visible side and rests on a thick, beveled platform. A wide, curved roof flares outward from the top of the housing, with each corner bending gently upward, and the lantern is crowned by a rounded, gourd-shaped finial. The stone surface appears rough and mottled, showing signs of age and weathering. Sunlight falls across the surrounding grass, while tall trees and a wooden fence mark the boundary of the area, indicating an outdoor installation outside Pine Grove Cemetery on the grounds of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. One of three carved stone lanterns on the campus, the artist and the work’s precise place of origin and date are unidentified. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16976-p17020)(NA4800.)
