Description
Black and white photograph of an abstract steel sculpture on a concrete base, with irregular cutout shapes scattered across tall vertical panels in a grassy campus setting. The photograph shows “Backflipper,” by Walter Easton, 1983, a sculpture consisting of nine upright steel plates arranged on a rectangular concrete pad, forming an open, multi-paneled structure with a rounded top on the central panel. Each plate contains jagged and curved cutout sections that, from a specific viewing position, align to form the figure of a mechanic dressed in work clothes performing a backward flip with tools in hand, though from this angle the parts appear fragmented and abstract. The dark steel panels rise to different heights, some extending straight up and others stopping lower, creating a layered, box-like enclosure. The sculpture stands on a mowed lawn near a paved road, with a metal-sided building, utility poles, and distant campus structures visible in the background. Northern Maine Technical College, Presque Isle, Maine. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17047-p17053)(NA4800.)
