Description
Black and white photograph of a steel sculpture showing the cutout figure of a backflipping mechanic holding wrenches, mounted on a concrete base outside a campus building. The photograph shows “Backflipper,” by Walter Easton, 1983, a sculpture composed of nine upright steel plates arranged on a rectangular concrete pad, forming a shallow, open-front structure with an arched top. Across these plates, shapes have been cut out so that, when viewed from the front, they align into the silhouette of a mechanic in work clothes, shown with bent legs and outstretched arms, each hand holding a wrench. The cutout figure appears in lighter tone against the dark steel, emphasizing the mechanic’s head, torso, limbs, and tools as if tumbling backward through the vertical elements. The sculpture stands in a grassy area near a sloping bank, with a brick and metal industrial-style campus building visible in the background. Northern Maine Technical College, Presque Isle, Maine. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17047-p17053)(NA4800.)
