Description

Color photograph of a stone sculpture carved with the relief image of a stylized oak tree, set outdoors on grass. The image shows one of "The Stones of Oakland," a 1993 public artwork by Carole Hanson located at Messalonskee High School in Oakland, Maine. Made from Maine bluestone, this stone features a large relief carving of an oak tree, its trunk rising at the center with branches extending outward, each ending in lobed leaves. The tree's design is bold and abstract, with flowing curved lines and deeply etched surfaces that accentuate the branching pattern. The stone stands upright on a grassy slope with background trees visible, emphasizing its natural theme. This piece is signed "CH93" on the back. The installation includes two stones, both featuring relief carvings, though only one is visible in the photograph. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)

Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
