Description

Color photograph of a square stone relief panel depicting a stylized elk in profile with large, flowing antlers, mounted on an exterior wall. The image shows one of the panels from "The Lost Eden," a 1989 relief sculpture by Carole Hanson installed on the facade of the school gymnasium at MSAD #58 in Phillips, Maine. The work is carved in polished travertine marble and displays a stylized, modern interpretation of an elk, with its body reduced to simple, curving outlines and its legs and hooves defined by incised lines. The elk faces to the right, and its sweeping antlers fill the upper portion of the panel with elongated, ribbon-like forms. The background is covered with short, repeated chisel marks that radiate around the figure, creating texture and emphasizing the animal’s silhouette. The square panel is set into a light-colored horizontal siding wall above a strip of red brick. The full installation consists of three relief panels showing an elk, a fox, and an eagle swooping down on a snake, and this photograph focuses on the elk panel. The sculpture is signed “C. Hanson 1989.” 1993. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)
