Description
Color photograph of a square stone relief panel depicting a stylized eagle diving toward a snake, mounted on an exterior wall. The image shows one of the panels from "The Lost Eden," a 1989 relief sculpture by Carole Hanson installed on the facade of the school gymnasium at MSAD #58 in Phillips, Maine. The work is carved in polished travertine marble and features a stylized, modern depiction of an eagle swooping down on a snake. The eagle fills the upper portion of the square panel, its outstretched wings angled upward and its body curving downward as its talons grasp toward the coiled snake below. The snake stretches along the bottom edge, its body forming a sweeping curve with a raised head and incised eyes. Short, repeated chisel marks cover the background, creating texture and emphasizing the silhouettes of the two animals. The panel is set into a light-colored horizontal siding wall above a band of red brick. The full installation consists of three relief panels showing an elk, a fox, and an eagle attacking a snake, and this photograph focuses on the eagle and snake panel. The sculpture is signed “C. Hanson 1989.” 1993. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)
