Description

Black and white photograph of a large, carved stone slab featuring a woman with flowing hair and outstretched arms, positioned beside a roadway and trees. The photograph centers on one of the three Maine bluestone monoliths in the "Brewer Centennial Monument" by sculptors Carole Hanson and Andreas Von Huene, 1994, signed "CH ARvHH," showing the stone set on a landscaped Brewer-brick terrace with grass, a road, and distant trees in the background. The broad face of the stone is carved in shallow relief with a stylized female figure in profile. The figure's long hair is streaming behind her, one arm extended forward and the other bent at the elbow, while she wears a long gown that sweeps diagonally across the rock’s surface. The figure's foot is extended below the gown's hem near the lower right corner of the stone. The figure’s facial features, hands, and simple circular pendant at her neck are clearly defined by smooth incised lines that contrast with the rough natural texture of the surrounding stone, emphasizing the integration of human imagery into the natural boulder. This monolith is part of a three-stone ensemble that also includes carvings of salmon with stylized streams of water, and another stone decorated with ferns and a duck, installed at Dyer's Cove, South Main Street, adjacent to the Route 395 bridge, Brewer, Maine. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)

Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
