Description

Black and white photograph of a large carved stone slab decorated with tall plants, set on a brick terrace with a highway bridge in the background. The photograph focuses on one of the three Maine bluestone monoliths from the "Brewer Centennial Monument" by sculptors Carole Hanson and Andreas Von Huene, 1994, signed "CH ARvHH," showing it resting on a landscaped Brewer brick terrace near Dyer's Cove. The broad face of the stone is carved in shallow relief with three vertical stems with evenly spaced, lance-shaped leaves arranged in opposite pairs, suggesting the general form of ferns or other compound-leaved woodland plants rather than a specific, botanically accurate species. At the upper left corner of the stone, the outline of a duck appears in low relief, tying the plant imagery to local wildlife, while the rough, uncarved upper surface of the boulder rises toward a bright sky and the dark structure of the Route 395 bridge visible beyond. This monolith forms part of a three-stone ensemble that also includes a stone carved with a female figure in a long gown and another decorated with salmon and stylized streams of water, all located at Dyer's Cove, South Main Street, adjacent to the Route 395 bridge, Brewer, Maine. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)
