Description
Black and white photograph of a tall stone slab carved with two salmon near the center, with other carved stones and trees visible in the background. The photograph presents a close side view of one of the three Maine bluestone monoliths in the "Brewer Centennial Monument" by sculptors Carole Hanson and Andreas Von Huene, 1994, signed "CH ARvHH," showing its rough, vertical surface and a smooth panel where two salmon are carved in shallow relief, angled as if swimming upward. To the left edge of the slab, the carved curving lines of stylized streams of water from the adjacent face of the stone are partially visible, while in the background another large stone with the outline of a female figure in a long gown can be seen. The sculptures are set on the landscaped, Brewer-brick terrace that curves across the bottom of the image. Leafless trees and a bright sky frame the monument, emphasizing its outdoor setting at Dyer's Cove, South Main Street, adjacent to the Route 395 bridge, Brewer, Maine. Together, the three stones depict water, fish, plant life, a duck, and a woman, combining natural and human imagery in a single sculptural ensemble. 1994. Unidentified photographer.
