Description

Color photograph of an abstract sculpture made by Dale Thomas, a metalworker and sculptor from Brooks, Maine, created from industrial metal parts. The image shows a freestanding sculpture made from a large ring gear and pinion set arranged at the base, with a used ball bearing mounted at the top on a threaded metal shaft. The cylindrical pinion rises vertically from the gear, giving the piece a mechanical and geometric appearance. The sculpture stands on the ground in a field of dry grass and leaf litter, with leafless trees and blue sky in the background, emphasizing its rugged and industrial aesthetic in a natural landscape. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16889-p16908)(NA4800.)

Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
