Description
Color photograph of "Buoy Bell" by Dale Thomas, a metalworker and sculptor from Brooks, Maine. The image displays a tall outdoor sculpture featuring an elongated copper bell hanging inside a curved, copper metal frame, which stands on a grassy slope against a clear blue sky. At the top, the finial consists of a metal arrow with a pig silhouette as a weather vane, adding a whimsical nautical touch. Suspended beneath the bell is a green cutout shaped like the state of Maine, serving as the bell’s wind catcher. Bare trees and hints of autumn foliage appear in the background. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16889-p16908)(NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
