Description
Black and white photograph of a large wooden, two dimensional bird sculpture with outstretched wings mounted above the entrance of a storefront. Known as "The Bar Harbor Sea Gull," this sculptural artwork was created by the late Maine artist Bernard "Blackie" Langlais (1921-1977). It is prominently displayed on the upper facade of a storefront in Bar Harbor, Maine. The sculpture is constructed from numerous wood pieces, possibly cedar shakes, forming the central body and expansive wings of a gull. The backdrop is vertical wood siding, and the upper part of the building features a gable and arched window. 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See p16252-p16254.) (See NA4800.)
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
