Description
Black and white photograph of two tall, cylindrical wooden pilings with a stylized wooden bird perched on the taller post, situated outdoors beside a barn at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing, Maine. “Two Shore Birds on Pilings (#49)” by sculptor Bernard “Blackie” Langlais, created circa 1974 from painted wood set on a concrete foundation, and installed on the grounds of the Langlais Art Preserve, the former property of Bernard and Helen Friend Langlais in Cushing, Maine. The composition features two vertical, barrel-like timber pilings bound by rings, with the taller piling supporting a simplified, blocky bird form that evokes coastal shorebirds and reflects Langlais’s late-career focus on animal subjects made in wood for outdoor display. The piece stands within a wooded clearing near farm buildings on the preserved homestead, part of a 10-acre outdoor art environment integrated into a larger 90-acre nature preserve that visitors can explore along accessible paths. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p16252-p16254, p16959-p16975) (See also NA4654.)(NA4800.)
