Description
Black and white photograph of the bronze relief on the pedestal of “Our Lady of Victories” monument in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. The image features a detailed view of the bronze relief sculpture attached to the granite base of the Our Lady of Victories monument, depicting three uniformed Civil War sailors standing in front of draped flags adorned with laurel wreaths. The figures include (left to right): a seaman on the left holding a coil of rope, a central Navy officer in long coat holding binoculars, and a Marine on the right gripping a sword. Ornamental details surround the grouping, and the monument's sturdy granite construction is evident through its sharply cut edges and decorative molding. Created by sculptor Franklin Simmons and dedicated in 1891, the monument commemorates Portland men who served and sacrificed in the Civil War, symbolizing honor, service, and unity through its classical and military imagery in the heart of the city. Undated. Abbe Levin, photograph. (See p16847-p16857)(NA4800.)
