Description
Black and white photograph of a front perspective of the sailors relief sculpture located on the granite base of the Our Lady of Victories monument in Portland, Maine. The sculpture, also known as the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, features three bronze Civil War figures (left to right): a seaman with a coil of rope on the left, a central Navy officer clad in a long coat holding binoculars, and a Marine with a sword at his side on the right. Behind the men, several decorative flags and laurel wreaths rise vertically, and above them, the feet and lower gown of the allegorical Victory statue are visible atop the pedestal. The granite base frames the bronze grouping with sharp edges and formal architectural moldings, and pigeons are perched along the upper ledge. Designed by Franklin Simmons and unveiled in 1891, this monument honors Portland residents who served in the Civil War and incorporates classical, symbolic, and military motifs to embody civic remembrance and respect for those who fought and died for the Union. Undated. Abbe Levin, photograph. (See p16847-p16857)(NA4800.)
