Description
Black and white photograph of the bronze relief sculpture of Civil War soldiers on the pedestal of “Our Lady of Victories,” located in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. This photograph displays the second bronze relief on the Our Lady of Victories monument, also known as the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, showing three figures (left to right): a Civil War cannoneer holding a rammer, an officer with a sword, and a soldier holding a musket. All are positioned before draped flags decorated with laurel wreaths. An eagle is perched atop the central flag staff. The detailed sculpture stands out against the smooth granite of the pedestal, with the feet and flowing gown of the Victory statue visible above. This monument, dedicated in 1891 and created by Franklin Simmons, commemorates Portland citizens who served in the Civil War, using classical and military iconography to symbolize honor, remembrance, and unity within a city plaza. Undated. Abbe Levin, photograph. (See p16847-p16857)(NA4800.)
