Description
Black and white photograph of the bronze commemorative plaque and granite pedestal of “Our Lady of Victories,” located in Monument Square, Portland, Maine. The photograph presents a close-up view of the bronze plaque mounted on the granite base of the Our Lady of Victories monument, with the embossed text clearly visible beneath an ornamental bronze eagle and wreath. The inscription reads: “1861 1865 / MORE THAN FOUR THOUSAND MEN / WERE ENROLLED FROM PORTLAND / IN THE ARMY AND NAVY FOR THE / WAR OF THE REBELLION. / MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED / WERE KILLED IN BATTLE OR / DIED IN SERVICE. / HONOR AND GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / TO THE DEAD EQUAL HONOR TO THOSE / WHO, DARING TO DIE, SURVIVED.” Part of the sculpted ornamental detail and masonry of the pedestal is visible, with pigeons perched along the architectural edges. Erected in 1891 and designed by Franklin Simmons, the monument honors Portland citizens who served and died for the Union during the Civil War, representing themes of sacrifice, civic duty, and remembrance through its bronze allegorical figure and inscribed granite base, which resides in a city plaza framed by historic and commercial buildings. Undated. Abbe Levin, photograph. (See p16847-p16857)(NA4800.)
