Abstract/ Summary

This article explores the complexities of forest carbon markets and sustainable forest management through a case study of the author’s "Pine Paradise" woodlot in Seboeis Plantation, Maine. The author details an experience evaluating different carbon offset programs like NCX and FCW, contrasting their approaches to compensating landowners for carbon sequestration or harvest deferral. The article analyzes the carbon implications of conservative, silviculturally guided harvesting (as implemented in 2022) versus passive (no harvest) management and heavy liquidation harvesting with no silvicultural basis. The Forest Vegetation Simulator is used to illustrate the fate of harvested carbon and the long-term carbon storage under these management scenarios. Ultimately, the author advocates for conservative, sustainable forestry practices as the most beneficial approach for both carbon storage and the production of forest products, contrasting this with liquidation harvesting.
