Abstract/ Summary
This article discusses the significant impact of the native white pine weevil (Pissodes strobi) on eastern white pine, particularly on young trees growing in full sunlight. Despite historical pessimism regarding white pine management due to this pest, the author emphasizes that proper silvicultural practices like shelterwood regeneration and maintaining dense stands can effectively minimize weevil damage by creating unfavorable conditions for the insect. The article outlines the weevil's life cycle and details practical control measures such as timely insecticide application and corrective pruning of infested leaders. While genetic resistance research has shown limited success, the author notes promising self-correcting traits in some fast-growing clones, suggesting a potential avenue for future study alongside effective silvicultural management.
