Abstract
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, where she speaks only English, Mary Elizabeth Aubé longs to learn French so that she can be a part of the conversations when she visits her father's family in Lewiston, Maine, where she overhears stories and jokes told in French. At last, as an adult, she finally speaks French well enough that she is able to get to know her grandmother Aubé through conversations with her, and they record stories of Memère's life. Included is the story of Memère and Pepère's arrival in Lewiston from Quebec.
