Description
Black and white photograph of a pond with tall grasses in the foreground and, in the distance, an abstract metal sculpture of Lady Godiva on a horse set on the lawn near a house and trees. The photograph shows a calm pond filling the lower half of the image, bordered by reeds and tall grasses along the far shore, where the welded recycled-metal sculpture entitled, "Lady Godiva" by Robert “Dan” Daniels, ca. 1982, stands on the lawn at the home of Frank Wheelock in Cushing, Maine. The abstract figure of Lady Godiva astride a horse appears small at this distance, silhouetted against the lighter background of open grass and scattered trees, with her elongated form and the horse’s simplified body suggesting motion. To the left, a low house with a chimney and flagpole sits behind plantings, anchoring the sculpture in a domestic setting, while mature conifers and deciduous trees frame the right side and background. Daniels, a former boilermaker from St. George, Maine, turned metal sculptor, uses welded scrap metal to create this stylized interpretation of the legendary rider, which becomes a focal point within the broader landscape of water, lawn, and trees. 1994. Paul Faria, photographer. (See p17091-p17093)(NA4800.)
