Description
Black and white photograph of a welded metal sculpture of St. George in armor on a horse, raising a sword as he faces an unseen dragon on a grassy lawn with trees behind. The photograph shows Robert “Dan” Daniels’s welded recycled-metal sculpture "St. George and the Dragon," undated, in St. George, Maine. The armored figure of St. George sits astride a stylized horse. St. George wears a helmet with narrow eye slits, a chest plate, and cylindrical arm and leg guards, and he holds a long sword aloft in his right hand while his left arm supports a large oval shield marked with a simple Christian cross. The horse has an elongated neck and head, a smooth, barrel body, and a long, fringed skirt that suggests a caparison, with a Christian cross motif on a cloth panel over its chest. A flat stone with a small plaque lies in the grass in the foreground, while dense trees form a backdrop that frames the lone figure, who is posed to confront a separate dragon sculpture located out of the frame. Daniels, a former boilermaker from St. George turned metal sculptor, uses welded scrap metal to create this dramatic representation of the legendary saint and his mount. 1994. ©Peggy McKenna, photographer.
