Description
Color photograph of William Zorach’s bronze sculpture “Pioneer Family,” based on a 1936 model and cast in 1964, installed on a low rectangular base in Waldoboro, Maine. The sculpture has a dark, greenish-black patina. In the front of the group, a nude woman kneels on her right knee with her left foot flat on the base, torso upright, holding an open book in her proper left hand while cradling a nude toddler against her chest with her right arm; the toddler stands between her knees, turned toward her, chin tucked. Directly behind the woman, an older nude child stands visible from the waist up, with both hands resting on the woman’s shoulders. A tall nude man stands to the child's right with his left hand placed on the back of the woman's upper shoulder and his right arm rests against the older child’s back. The man’s legs are set apart in a stable stance that frames the family group. All four figures have simplified, rounded anatomy with a subtly pebbled surface. They are tightly grouped so that their limbs and torsos interlock into a single vertical mass, emphasizing their connection. Surrounding the sculpture are low shrubs, grass, and a rough stone wall, with a multi-story brick building filling the background. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17154-p17156)(NA4800.)
