Description

Black and white photograph of a large carved wooden horse sculpture covered with flower designs, standing on a grassy area near small buildings and other outdoor sculptures at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing, Maine. The artwork shown is “Flowered Horse (#34)” by sculptor Bernard “Blackie” Langlais, created in 1974 from carved and tooled wood with paint, set on a concrete foundation at the Langlais Art Preserve, the former property of Bernard and Helen Friend Langlais in Cushing, Maine. The horse is constructed from thick upright wooden slabs joined to form a blocky, monumental animal with a rectangular body, sturdy legs, and a large head, all carved with simple contours and shallow relief lines to suggest facial features, mane, and tail. The horse and its supporting elements are incised with repeated floral motifs—tall stems, leaves, and open blossoms—giving the surface a dense pattern of stylized plants that echo the surrounding field and shrubs. The sculpture stands in an open grassy clearing speckled with small wildflowers, with low shingled structures to the left and additional Langlais wooden figures visible in the distance. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. [Sculpture has since been relocated to the Roberts Farm Preserve of the Western Foothills Land Trust, Norway, Maine.] (See p16252-p16254, p16959-p16975) (See also NA4654.)(NA4800.)
