Description
Black and white photograph of a large stylized wooden cow standing on a concrete base next to a weathered barn at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing, Maine. The artwork depicted is “Flowered Cow (#35)” by sculptor Bernard “Blackie” Langlais, created in 1974 from carved and tooled wood with paint and set on a concrete foundation at the Langlais Art Preserve, the former property of Bernard and Helen Friend Langlais. The sculpture shows a blocky cow figure with a rectangular body formed from stacked wooden blocks, its head turned slightly to one side with carved ears and facial features including round eyes and a wide muzzle. Dense patterns of swirling lines and shapes cover the body and head to represent flowers or foliage, while a wide udder and long thin tail hangs from the hind quarters. Four sturdy legs support the weight on a square concrete pad. The cow stands in a grassy area, positioned beside a wooden barn. 1994. Unidentified, photographer.[Sculpture has since been relocated to the Roberts Farm Preserve of the Western Foothills Land Trust, Norway, Maine.] (See p16252-p16254, p16959-p16975) (See also NA4654.)(NA4800.)
