Description

Color photograph of a Maine bluestone sculpture with intricate relief carving, surrounded by flowering plants, and accompanied by a white marble bird bath. The photograph depicts "Untitled," (1991) a sculptural work by Carole Hanson at Monmouth Middle School, Monmouth, Maine. The primary element is a large block of Maine bluestone with a carved relief design resembling a stylized plant or flower with long, arching lines that extend across the stone. Above the main carving, bird motifs are also visible. The sculpture is set within a vibrant garden of yellow and purple flowers and dense green ground cover. To the side, out of direct frame, there is a quasi diamond shaped Vermont marble bird bath associated with the installation. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)

Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
