Description

Black and white photograph of the Firemen's Memorial by Edward Souther Griffin outside the Portland Central Fire Station in Portland, Maine. The image shows a full-length statue of a firefighter wearing a Victorian-era fire uniform, complete with a long coat, hat, and mustache, holding a fire hose with both hands, his proper left hand grasping the nozzle. The firefighter stands atop a decorative square stone base featuring both polished and unpolished surfaces, with an inscription that reads, "P.F.D. / ERECTED BY / CITIZENS OF PORTLAND / IN HONOR OF / THE FIRE DEPARTMENT / 1898," and scallop-shaped edging near the top. The statue and base are positioned within a landscaped area in front of a large historic building, with other buildings and vehicles visible in the background. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16878-p16884)(NA4800.)
