Description
Color photograph of a weathered two-story house with unusual outdoor sculptures and stacked wood, located on Military Street in Houlton, Maine. The photograph shows a dark-colored, older home with a dormer containing three windows, positioned next to a road. The property and yard are densely arranged with large, handmade sculptures and structures, many of which resemble aliens, dinosaurs, and abstract forms created out of scrap materials and wood. Nearby, stacks of cut wood are piled beside the house, and plant life is intermixed with the artworks. This collection was created by artist Jerry Cardone outside his home, an evolving site known variously as the "Alien Art Outdoor Museum," "UFO Dinosaur Museum," and "7 Wonders of God Creatures." The town of Houlton legally condemned the property as an "automobile junkyard" in 2010, and officials cleared the site, burning most of the material in 2011. Undated. ©Hannigan, photographer. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
