Description

Black and white photograph of a Civil War Memorial in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine, featuring a statue of a soldier with a flag standing atop a large pedestal, accompanied by a cannon in front. The photograph shows the Civil War Memorial dedicated on May 30, 1895, funded by brothers Henry B. Cleaves and Nathan Cleaves, located among gravestones and trees at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine. The monument has a tall, multi-tiered pedestal with inscriptions on the face, supporting a statue of a Union soldier standing upright and holding a flag. In front of the monument, there is a wheeled Civil War cannon resting on the grass. Small flower arrangements are placed near the base of the statue. The inscription reads: "TO OUR / COMRADES. / IN HONOR OF THE LIVING. / IN GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE DEAD. / BOSWORTH POST / No. 2 G.A.R. / DEDICATED MAY 30, 1895." Surrounding the monument are additional headstones and leafless trees, indicating the season is likely late fall or early spring. 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See NA4800.)
