Description
Black and white photograph of the Stanley T. Pullen Memorial Fountain, ca. 1910-1917, on Federal Street in Portland, Maine, showing a stone structure with sculpted ornaments, water basins, and a commemorative plaque. The granite Stanley Pullen Fountain is a public fountain and horse trough designed by George Burnham of Portland. The monument was made by the New Hampshire Granite Company and includes an ornate central pedestal with a decorative top, six dolphin sculptures are set into the sides, and multiple water basins at the base. A large plaque in the center commemorates Stanley Pullen, who was a founder of The Portland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1872 and played an important role in founding the Maine Society for the Protection of Animals. The plaque reads, "IN MEMORY OF / STANLEY THOMAS PULLEN / PRESIDENT OF MAINE STATE SOCIETY / FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS / 1891-1910. / SWEET MERCY IS NOBILITY'S TRUE BADGE." 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See NA4800.)
