Description

Black and white photograph of "Annunciation — American Gas Pump," a vintage American Gas pump modified by H.G. Brack, 1990. The image depicts a vintage gasoline pump with visible signs of wear, including peeling paint and scratches, sculpturally situated in a natural outdoor setting. The rectangular pump features a round, glass globe at the top with the words "American Gas." The face of the pump includes the branding, "Gilbarco / CALCO-METER" below a round, almost globular sight glass bordered on the left with the words, "GLASS / MUST / BE FULL" and on the right with the words, "BEFORE & / AFTER / DELIVERY". Below the branding is painted text that reads, "This Sale / $" beside three rotating number dials. Below the dials are the words, "Dollars Cents / State & Federal Tax Included". Below this is the word, "GALLONS" above three rotating number dials. Beneath this are the words, "COMPUTED AT / CENTS PER GALLON" above and below three manually rotated number dials. The words "AMERICAN" and "REGULAR" are clearly marked on the pump's body. The pump's hose hangs loosely from its side. The sculpture is the gas pump itself, presented as a found object, with no additional sculptural elements visible around it. Hulls Cove Geronimo Sculpture Garden, located in Hulls Cove, Maine. The garden was established in 1990 by H.G. “Skip” Brack, a tool historian and art lover. 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See p16198-p16226.) (See NA4800.)
